Uploading Instructions

Access

You can access your web site on our virtual server. Just login with your normal username & password. Anonymous logins are not possible. You must use your username & password.

Uploading

To upload your web pages you will need an ftp program there are several you can use. (See our members ftp area for a few.) The most popular shareware program is CuteFTP 16 bit Trumpet users 16cftp18.exe and for 32 bit 32cftp18.exe

Domain IP

It will take 4 to 5 days before your accss providers DNS will be able to see your new web site. If you require access to your web site before the DNS becomes fully operational you can access your site via FTP to upload your pages by entering the IP of the server for your web site. To obtain your site's IP use: http://www.newnet.co.uk/cgi-bin-local/digw Then enter the IP only in the hostname/address/url box of your FTP program.

Web Directory

Your web pages are located in the directory called www-docs. This the directory for uploading your web pages. In this directory you will find your index.html. This is the file you should replace with your homepage.

Home Page File Name

Your auto-loading page file should be named index.html any other page name will not be displayed. (Note: This filename is case sensitive; it must be lower case). All file names should be in lower case. File extension names .htm or .html are both accepted, but if both are present .html will take precedence.


Front Page Extensions

FrontPage extensions are not loaded on your server as standard. Support for FrontPage is provided by Microsoft and NOT ourselves. We are unable to support html editors. Please do not remove any of the FrontPage files that are placed in your www-docs directory. Do not try to access your FrontPage site using ftp as can damage the FrontPage extensions. If you remove any files FrontPage will not operate. To have your site moved to a FrontPage server please send an email to: support@newnet.co.uk.


Web Stats

Under the Directory www-docs you will find a directory called www-stats. This contains log of accesses to your web site. It is updated every Monday morning between 2am and 7am.

Email SMTP / POP3 / Forwarded

Your mail will be fully operational 24 hours after you receive this message.
any-name@your-domain-name will be forwarded to your-email-box. This option enables the forwarding of unlimited email names at your domain to your mail box. If the above POP3 to: option is blank or says "not required" or "none". Then this option has not been supplied for this site. If it says "not known" Then please supply your mail box details.

Cgi Scripting

Information on cgi scripts can be found at: http://homepages.newnet.co.uk/support/
(Forms Handlers, Web counters etc.) Call up all up cgi scripts as http://www.your-domain-name/cgi-bin/script-name
Do not use http://homepages.newnet.co.uk/cgi-bin/ as this will only operate for sites on that server.
You will find some cgi scripts are already in place see the above link for details of scripts in your main /cgi-bin/ directory and read the cgi-bin.txt file in your root directory. If you require your own private cgi script area just send an email to support@newnet.co.uk and your own /cgi-bin-local/ will be created in your root directory. Details on using your own scripts can be found in your /cgi-bin-local/ directory.
